National Fitness Day - 5 Ways You Can Get Involved

National Fitness Day takes place this year on Wednesday 21st September and it’s a day that the organisers hope will “highlight the role that physical activity plays across the UK and raise awareness of its importance in assisting us to lead healthier lifestyles through being physically active”. 


In previous years, there have been plank offs, treadmill challenges, mass walks and even high street HIIT classes organised and this year promises to be just as high energy and fun. 


As we know that our OYG Warriors love a fitness challenge, here’s five ways you can get involved in National Fitness day this year!


  1. National Fitness Day events are all free to join and they’re the ideal opportunity to try something new or kickstart your health and wellness journey in the run up to Christmas. Use this handy location and activity finder to discover things going on your local area and don’t forget to use the #FitnessDay and tag @FitnessDayUK when you post your activities on social media. 
  2. If you have any influence over someone you know who owns a gym or fitness club or runs a fitness class (or maybe you do yourself), then try to encourage them to host an event. It can be anything from a free online class to a mass exercise challenge. All they need to do to get started is submit their location and activity and the guys at National Fitness Day will take it from there. 
  3. Are you a teacher, teaching assistant, school meal supervisor or member of the PTA? Or perhaps you’re a parent that’s passionate about getting kids into exercise? Schools can get involved with National Fitness Day too, and this year they're looking to get a record number of young people involved, so they need all the help they can get. 10@10 is an initiative to get kids taking part in ten minutes of exercise at 10am on National Fitness Day on 21st September. The 10@10 digital toolkit is available from the National Fitness Day website, so get downloading and get your local school involved! 
  4. The digital toolkit also provides information, advice and inspiration for holding a National Fitness day event in your workplace too. No matter how large or small your office/shop/factory/site/centre, why not get your team involved? Besides, some healthy rivalry between colleagues is a good thing, right…?
  5. Even if you’re not taking part in an official National Fitness Day challenge or event, it doesn’t mean that you can get away with sitting on the sofa! It’s the most active day of the year, so get your exercise gear on, pull on those trainers and get moving! Your next Own Your Goals workout is ideal, or why not try something completely new?
