Our Tips and Advice for Healthy, Glowing Skin this Summer

Hey OYG Warrior, how’s your summer going?! We hope you’re having a good one, and you’ve enjoyed our summer plans, recipes and wellbeing articles so far. In our articles, we cover a wide range of topics from food cravings to achieving sustainable results

But it isn’t often we talk about our skin - so in this article, we’re going to discuss skin, and how we can help it look and feel its absolute best!

Here’s our top skincare tips so that you can get the glow this summer, and not necessarily just because of the heat!

  • First up, the most important aspect of skincare, is to choose products that suit your skin type. So look for products that suit normal, dry oily, sensitive, acne prone or mature skin. These days, there's so much choice, and it's not all a gimmick - skincare brands really do spend a lot of investment choosing ingredients that suit certain skin types.
  • Aim to cleanse your skin using your chosen products twice a day. Cleansing at night removes makeup if you wear it, along with the dirt, grime, oil, dead skin cells, bacteria and environmental pollutants that have built up during the day. Cleansing in the morning removes sweat and dead skin cells that have built up overnight. This will help to keep your skin clean and your pores clear - clogged pores can lead to dull skin that's prone to spots and irritation.
  • Give your pores an extra flush by exfoliating once or twice a week. Choose a ‘mechanical’ exfoliant that contains rough particles, such as crushed apricot kernels, or a chemical exfoliant such as salicylic acid that gently peels away the top layers of skin. Go easy with salicylic and other acids if you’ve never used them before, as they can be quite harsh and always follow the instructions.
  • Use a gentle, oil free moisturiser during the day alongside an eye cream and an antioxidant serum to help keep your skin hydrated, happy and nourished. Antioxidants in skincare help to keep the natural barrier function of the skin healthy, helping to protect your skin from the harshness of skin dulling environmental toxins and pollutants.
  • You may choose a moisturiser with added SPF or you may apply a separate one under your moisturiser. If not, make sure you shield your skin from the sun by wearing a wide brimmed hat or staying in the shade when the sun is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm. We want gentle glow, not raw sunburn!
  • Makeup-wise, choose a waterproof, oil free under eye concealer and a lightweight, oil free foundation with light reflecting pigments. Keep shine at bay by also using a mattifying primer between your moisturiser and foundation, and applying pressed powder over the top of everything.
  • At night, you can use a heavier moisturiser that helps to nourish your skin as you sleep. When we sleep, our skin is renewing, pushing old skin cells to the surface and replenishing them with new ones. Give it a helping hand with a night time moisturiser with retinoids and/or peptides that help this process.
  • Finally, always stay hydrated! One of the biggest skin dulling culprits is dehydration, so always keep a bottle of water to hand.

Off you glow!
